Signs of a Carpenter Ant Problem

There are several clues that you may have a Carpenter Ant Infestation. Some infestations may not be visible from inside your home.

  • Carpenter Ants are traveling to and from your home or Foraging Trails.
  • Carpenter Ants inside your home.
  • Winged Carpenter Ants found in your home.
  • Excavated wood or “Frass” buildup at the base of interior or exterior walls, attic, or crawl space. This frass usually includes dead carpenter ants and bugs.
  • Sand-sized particles of foam insulation next to exterior walls or in the crawl space.

How can I prevent Carpenter Ants?

  • Inspect roofing, attic, crawl spaces for damage, leaks, excessive moisture, dry rot, and Carpenter Ant frass.
  • Remove downed trees and damp rotting wood from the area and remove brush away from the side of the home.
  • Ensure water drains away from your home.
  • Eliminate food sources. Aphids that inhabit the underside of birch trees produce honeydew, a favorite food of Carpenter Ants.
  • Keep firewood dry, up off the ground, and at least six feet away from your home.
  • Apply a Carpenter Ant preventative treatment in the spring and fall.

Carpenter Ant Extermination Plan

  • We listen to the client!
  • We identify and confirm the presence of Carpenter Ants and locate the source.
  • We suggest how preventative measures you can take to reduce or eliminate the problem yourself.
  • If Apex is necessary beyond that point, we will provide an estimate and explain the treatment plan.
  • We install mechanical barriers to help prevent Carpenter Ants from entering your home.
  • If the pest problem is beyond mechanical barriers' effectiveness, we determine a safe and effective chemical solution.
  • We monitor the treatment plan results and make the necessary adjustment until the home is pest-free!

Carpenter Ants are considered wood-destroying insects. Carpenter Ants do not eat and digest wood cellulose like the termite but build nests by excavating damp wood where dry rot exists. Once established, Carpenter Ants will damage new or dry wood as well. They often go unnoticed until the population becomes established and, in time, can cause significant structural damage.

Carpenter Ant workers are large, all-female, and range in size from 1/4 “- 3/4” long. Most are either black or dark in color. Only the males and the queens have wings. Winged males or “swarmers” can grow to 15mm or 9/16”. The males' only purpose is to mate with the queen, and then they die shortly afterward. Queen Carpenter Ants can range from 13-25mm or ½”-1” long. Once a queen mates, she drops her wings and searches for ideal conditions to build a nest and start a colony.
