There are several clues that you may have a Carpenter Ant Infestation. Some infestations may not be visible from inside your home.
Carpenter Ants are considered wood-destroying insects. Carpenter Ants do not eat and digest wood cellulose like the termite but build nests by excavating damp wood where dry rot exists. Once established, Carpenter Ants will damage new or dry wood as well. They often go unnoticed until the population becomes established and, in time, can cause significant structural damage.
Carpenter Ant workers are large, all-female, and range in size from 1/4 “- 3/4” long. Most are either black or dark in color. Only the males and the queens have wings. Winged males or “swarmers” can grow to 15mm or 9/16”. The males' only purpose is to mate with the queen, and then they die shortly afterward. Queen Carpenter Ants can range from 13-25mm or ½”-1” long. Once a queen mates, she drops her wings and searches for ideal conditions to build a nest and start a colony.
